Why can yard waste not go in with construction debris in Florida?
Because state rules treat yard trash as a separate waste stream from solid waste. Vegetative debris is supposed to reach a yard-waste or mulching facility where it becomes compost or mulch, not a construction and demolition landfill. Mix palm fronds into a demolition load and the whole container gets reclassified or rejected at the scale. It is the single most common mistake we correct in Brevard. Book the green material as its own clean load and keep the demo box separate from day one.
The county picks up storm debris for free. Why would I rent a container?
Right-of-way collection only runs after a declared event, only takes material stacked at the kerb, and can run for weeks depending on the contractor and the route. It will not touch anything you carried out of the house, anything cut before a declaration, or anything you want gone this week for a listing or an insurance inspection. A container on your property is about control of timing. Check Florida Division of Emergency Management for what a declaration actually activates.
Can stumps and root balls go in a yard waste dumpster?
Usually yes, but tell us at booking because they change the load. A dug root ball carries sand, soil and sometimes rock, which pushes weight up sharply and can affect where the load is accepted — some yard-waste facilities limit soil content. Ground stump grindings mixed with dirt are the same issue. Large trunk sections are fine if they are cut to a manageable length. Describe what the tree service left and we will size it properly the first time.
What do I do with hurricane debris that is a mix of vegetation and building material?
Split it, and split it as you work rather than afterwards. Palm crowns, limbs and shrubs go in the vegetative load. Fence panels, soffit and fascia, shingles, screen enclosure aluminium and anything structural go in a construction container. Sorting a mixed pile after it is stacked is miserable work. Is there a limit on how much sod or dirt I can load?
Yes, and it comes up fast. Wet Florida sod, fill and sandy soil are among the heaviest materials a homeowner ever puts in a container, and a 20 yard filled with them would be well past legal road weight. We size soil and sod jobs into a 15 yard or smaller and swap as needed. Tell us at booking if there is any dirt in the load at all, because a container we thought was holding brush changes completely once soil is involved.
